7 Fun Things To Do In Maui With Kids
Looking for fun things to do in Maui with kids that are all about having a wonderful experience and not just about spending money? From glamping in tentalows, escaping the heat on a forest hike or going skating at Maui’s only outdoor skating rink at sunset. Here some excellent things that will make time in Maui with kids fun for everyone and memorable for all.
Take a walk in the Forest
The Makawao Forest is a great place to take a walk with the kids and enjoy the cool air and unique landscape. This quaint little spot for hiking is just a 20 minute drive from Kahului and just outside of Makawao town. Unlike most places in the United States there are no wolfs to chase you or snakes to bite you. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and the refreshing air as you listen to the breeze blow through the pines. When going on the hike remember to bring some water and definitely some mosquito spray.
Go Glamping
If you haven’t heard of glamping before, it’s about taking camping to the NEXT LEVEL. There is no doubt that staying in a tentalow next to the ocean is a fun form of camping for kids and you don’t have to set-up anything. These tentalows at Camp Olowalu have two twin beds, led lighting and bathrooms close by. These tentalows are located about 100 yards from a nice beach area to take a swim or play in the sand. This is a great Maui activity to take a night off from the hotel and spend some quality family time. Oh, did i forget to mention the amazing food at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop just across the street where you can grab some of the islands best pastries and burgers. In addition to Leoda’s there is a little general store where you can get cold drinks, shave ice and snacks as well as a fresh coconut from the roadside fruit stand. Just be “Super Careful” crossing the highway to get there, it is an extremely busy highway.
Get Family Portraits in Maui
Could you ever think of a more amazing backdrop in your life for family photos than the amazing beach and ocean scenery of Maui. With the waves lapping on the shore, sand between your toes and your kids having fun on the beach, there is no portrait studio in the world that could hold a candle to Maui beach family portraits.
Vacationing with family is truly the perfect time to have one of the islands most sought-after Maui family photographers take photos of your beautiful family. In one hour Karma Hill Photography can capture wonderful candid images of your family having fun being themselves and at the same time get a few posed wall hangers for your front room. Karma Hill Photography’s team is devoted to capturing beautiful images of you and your family and with over 1900 photography shoots completed, they have tons of experience photographing families just like yours on the beaches and jungles of Maui, Hawaii.
Fly A Kite
Maui has trade winds blowing nearly every day of the year and most days are great to go and get a kite in the air. A couple of great parks for flying kites would be the Giggle Hill Park or Baldwin Beach Park which have huge expansive areas perfect for flying your kite and not getting it caught in a tree. The best place to get a kite is at Target. All of the resources we found online were for kite boarding. We have no dedicated kite shop yet 🙂
Go Skating at Sunset
Most people don’t know that Maui has an outdoor inline skating rink. This skating rink can be found at Kalama Park in Kihei and is open Wednesday 6pm-8Pm and on Friday and Saturday at 6pm-8pm. Skate rentals are $5 and you can get more information at Maui Inline Hockey Association.
Go to Baby Beach in Lahaina
With waste deep water for over 100 yards strait out blocked by outer reef, Baby Beach in Lahaina is the perfect place for little ones to make a sand castle and mom and dad to actually sit and relax for a moment. At this beach the water is shallow, calm and surprisingly warm. This baby beach in Maui is the perfect place to take your kids and not have to worry about them getting knocked down by a wave or getting tossed super hard by the surf. The only thing about this jewel of a beach is parking. Parking is located down a small side street with only 5 available spots and can be a challenge. If there are two adults, we recommend dropping your things off at the beach access quickly and having the other person drive around for a parking spot so you don’t have to carry everything a long distance with your kids. Also, do not be confused with the Baby Beach in Paia. Baby Beach in Lahaina is far less windy and the water is much more calm on a regular basis.
Sunset Sea Turtles at Hookipa
One of our favorite things to do in Maui with kids is go and see the turtles on the beach at Hookipa Beach Park just outside of Paia at sunset. It is nothing short of amazing to have the chance to see up to 20 – 30 sea turtles up on the beach resting after a hard day eating sea weed. The turtles congregate all the way to the right hand side of the beach if you are facing the water. There is usually a conservationist on the beach making sure you don’t get to close to the turtles for their safety. The conservationists are very knowledgeable and can answer most any questions about the turtles. It is such a wonderful thing to see so many beautiful sea turtles all in one place.
