I've lived on Maui for nearly 30 years and one thing most every resident owns is a surfboard. I originally moved to Maui to windsurf but when there was no wind, surfing became the natural thing to do while waiting for the tradewinds to re-appear. Fast forward 25 years and now I'm 50+ years old but I still have a rack of boards in my garage. Sailboards, surfboards, paddle boards and even a kayak. So when my brother arrives on Maui with his kids, I load up the Silverado with all the toys and head to the beach. My niece's boyfriend from England is excited to surf so I head out on the paddle board with him on my 9 foot longboard. I give him some basic instruction and he is able to stand up several times on the small waves at Launiopoko beach park just outside of Lahaina, Maui. My 18 year old son who is more of a field sports kid knows how to surf but hasn't done it in several years. It's never been his passion, but when he sees his friend out in the line up he grabs my board and heads out. They catch several waves together and he remembers how much fun he used to have surfing. I tell him that he only has a couple months left to surf before he heads to college on the mainland. He knows the first question he will get when his new friends find out he is from Maui... "do you surf?" With my surfboard being used, I stick to my paddleboard and am able to have as much fun as the surfers catching many of the larger waves of the day. [...]
Maui is full of beautiful backdrops for family portrait opportunities. Whether you're looking for a location that gives breath-taking beauty or simple garden experiences, Maui is a photographer’s dream. Here are a handful of our favorite types of settings for family portraits: Local Parks Local parks offer quiet and picturesque backdrops for simple family portraits. Many locations around the island provide tree-lined spaces or quaint gardens with plenty of color. Place a couple of children in a playground setting with family, and you have a great backdrop for the picture. Beaches Maui is home to some of the world's most beautiful beaches. Family beach portraits are a great way to remember your vacation and time on the island. Pro tip: When taking pictures at the beach, sunsets are usually the best time to take the photos. When taking the shots, however, try to angle your family in a position where the sun doesn't interfere with your pictures by making sure the sun isn't directly behind your family. State Parks State parks are also great for capturing the beauty of the island. For example, Polipoli Springs State Recreation Park is a wonderland of photography options. There's nothing like Maui's Cypress and Eucalyptus trees to really make a family portrait pop. Also, the many trails that extend through the park provide foliage snapshots at every bend. Another great spot is the Honomanu Falls. The falls are absolutely beautiful but keep in mind, it can be a trek to get there. Another one of our favorites is Kahakuloa Head. It isn’t the easiest to reach, but it's well worth the hike. Local Landmarks Local landmarks can provide amazing backdrops for family photos. One of our favorites is Dragon's [...]
Things you need to know to sell art on Instagram. I have had several clients ask me where I get my sales leads for my art. Instagram! The beauty of Instagram is that you can connect with people all over the world. Unlike Facebook and LinkedIn which are your friends or business associates, Instagram lets you connect with people who have similar interests around the world. I have met probably a hundred people face to face that follow me on Instagram. It's crazy. Step one is to download the Instagram APP, activate it and set up an Instagram name. Make your "nickname" fun and memorable. Have it relate to your art and include your first name if possible. Your full name can be included in the description if you'd like. Some of my favorites are Gary_draws_fish, TikiRob (that's me), FlamingoFred, theartcoach, and giantstrawberry. That leads us to your description. Instagram allows a couple lines to describe yourself and give a link to your website. You cannot add "clickable" links anywhere on Instagram except in your description, so be sure to add it here. Once you are set-up start exploring by clicking the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of your screen. It will show you some popular posts. As you use Instagram more these will relate to your interests and the hash tags that you use. (More on Hashtags later.) The search bar at the top of the "magnifying glass" page will allow you to search People, Tags, Places, and it even recommends people to follow. I would start with Tags. When people post a photo in Instagram they can add a "#" symbol and a description of the photo. This way others can find [...]
7 Fun Things To Do In Maui With Kids Looking for fun things to do in Maui with kids that are all about having a wonderful experience and not just about spending money? From glamping in tentalows, escaping the heat on a forest hike or going skating at Maui's only outdoor skating rink at sunset. Here some excellent things that will make time in Maui with kids fun for everyone and memorable for all. Take a walk in the Forest The Makawao Forest is a great place to take a walk with the kids and enjoy the cool air and unique landscape. This quaint little spot for hiking is just a 20 minute drive from Kahului and just outside of Makawao town. Unlike most places in the United States there are no wolfs to chase you or snakes to bite you. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and the refreshing air as you listen to the breeze blow through the pines. When going on the hike remember to bring some water and definitely some mosquito spray. Go Glamping If you haven't heard of glamping before, it's about taking camping to the NEXT LEVEL. There is no doubt that staying in a tentalow next to the ocean is a fun form of camping for kids and you don't have to set-up anything. These tentalows at Camp Olowalu have two twin beds, led lighting and bathrooms close by. These tentalows are located about 100 yards from a nice beach area to take a swim or play in the sand. This is a great Maui activity to take a night off from the hotel and spend some quality family time. Oh, did i forget to mention the amazing food at [...]
